In 1984 after former President and First Lady, Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter drew attention to Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) by serving on a Build Trip to New York City, HFHI experienced dramatic growth and now there are Habitat Affiliates in every state and several countries. In October 2012 the organization celebrated its 500,000 home.
Our Person County Affiliate was incorporated in 1992 and soon built its first 3 homes on Merrit Place between 1993 & 1996. The 4th house, on Rueben Allen Rd., was completed in Feb. 1997. A few years later the 5th house, on Front St., was started in 2003 and the 6th house, on Mollie Mooney, was started in 2006.
In 2008 one of the homes on Merrit Place had to be remodeled and a new family purchased it in the Spring of 2009. In total, PCHFH has built 6 homes and is currently working on the 7th. With the 7th build comes a new commitment to build all Habitat homes to be energy efficient.
After a brief period of inactivity, our current Board of Directors has initiated a new period of growth for this affiliate. Since joining the board at Habitat over the last 3-4 years, the new board members have started regular fundraising activities to support new building projects.
This year marked the third Annual Yard Sale and Auction which has been our largest fundraising event. We have also had barbeques, dinners, and musical events to raise funds and awareness for our projects. We have become more active in the community and have been visible at other community events like Personality and Fire Prevention Week.
The future for Person County Habitat is bright and as we continue to grow it is our plan to soon serve at least one family per year through our home-ownership program and to begin implementing A Brush With Kindness. We also plan to increase the size of our Board of Directors and committees. In 2013 we will launch a newsletter and are recruiting from local youth community groups to create and publish a monthly newsletter.
